Obituary for Leon Ray Bierbower

Leon Ray Bierbower passed away Saturday evening, December 19, 2020 at his home in Chambersburg. He was born April 25, 1935 in Saville Township, Perry County. He was the son of the late Raymond and Sallie Light Bierbower. He served in the United States Army, and was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees. He was a member of the Chambersburg Road Runners Club and Perry County Road Runners Club. He was a member of LifePoint Church in Chambersburg.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Miller Bierbower, whom he married on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1960; a son, Allen (Karen) Bierbower; a daughter, Amy Sneath; three grandchildren, Sarah and Steven Bierbower, and Madison Sneath. He was preceded in death by one brother; seven half-brothers; and one half- sister.

He worked at Macky Vending in Harrisburg, and Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, retiring in 1993. Leon enjoyed running. He ran the Boston Marathon twice and the JFK 50 miler 12 times. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and went on mission trips to the Dominican Republic and other mission trips in the United States.

There will be a private funeral service for the family and then a public Celebration of Life service on Leon’s birthday on April 25, 2021. Friends are invited to attend a graveside committal service at 11:15 AM on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Lincoln Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.

The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County, 1502 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the Tim and Susan Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

My sincerest condolences to Leon's family. Last time I met Leon he was getting ready to do a run on the rails trails from Britton Park in Shippensburg. I have many memories of running in races he ran. May you run effortlessly forever Leon and rest in peace...
