Obituary for Claudia Wehn Smith Williams

Claudia Wehn Smith Williams, age 77, formerly of Huntingdon, PA and a current resident of Fayetteville, PA, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at her home on Monday, November 2, 2020. Born October 22, 1943, in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Anna Griffith Smith.
A 1961 graduate of the Huntingdon Area High School, Claudia went on to work as a homemaker, caring for her family most of her adult life. For 32 years, she was the “Mayor of the Mountain” and “Queen of her Castle”, Claudia was definitely one of a kind. She was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, where she volunteered countless hours. Claudia was an accomplished artist who enjoyed acrylics and water colors. She was also fond of cooking, knitting, gardening, and going to the beach; however, her most cherished time was caring for her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Heather M. Williams of Lancaster, PA and Tracey A. Gottshall (husband Scott) of Duncansville, PA; six grandchildren, Alex M. Barley of Wilmington, NC, Nicholas R. Barley of Washington, D.C., and Mariah L. Barley of Washington, D.C. and Emily R. Gottshall of Salisbury, MD, Andrew W. Gottshall and Erica H. Gottshall of Duncansville, PA; a sister, Barbara Impollonia of Smyrna, DE; sister in law, Beth Williams of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; brother in law, John Williams (wife Jody) of Coalstrip, MT; and her beloved companion, Bandit. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” C. Williams in 2011 and two brothers and two sisters. Claudia wishes to extend to her neighbors a debt of gratitude for their care and companionship over the years.
It was Claudia’s wish that all services and interment be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to SpiriTrust Lutheran Hospice, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, PA 17202. Online condolences may be offered on her Book of Memories page at

To Claudia’s daughters and their families,
I am heartbroken to hear of Claudia’s death. She was the best neighbor that I ever had. I consider her to have been my best friend. We shared not only a driveway, but also our lives. We shared the happiest times like when each grandchild was born, as well as the saddest times, like when Bob died. She was always there for me...usually with a smile and a homemade meal. I will miss her so much. Please know that she was a shining light on Mt. Union Rd., and she will be missed by many.

To Claudia’s family: Your mother/grandmother was a remarkable woman. I was so lucky to get to know both Claudia and Bob over the years. They were wonderful hosts, always welcoming me into their home. I will miss Claudia’s updates on the mountain happenings but I know that her spirit and love shines on in her children and grandchildren. She will be missed.

Claudia and I were in homeroom together. She was well liked and respected by her classmates. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May they find comfort in their fond memories and the knowledge that Claudia is now at perfect peace.
