Obituary for Valenceia M. Prather

Valencia Maria Prather was born in Washington, DC to the late Sinclair Brooks and Johnnie Mae Charles. On March 2, 2023, Valencia received her angel wings. She was surrounded by family and friends shortly before her transition to heaven.

Valencia received her education at Cardozo Senior High school in the District of Columbia. She also studied at University of Maryland College Park. Valencia was a dedicated federal government employee for more than 34 years. After much hard work she retired from the U.S. Customs Service as an Employment Program Specialist in January 2002 following the tragic events of 9/11. She moved to Pennsylvania shortly after retirement to a peaceful home in the mountains.

Valencia had a blessed life. She spent most of her life in Washington, DC, Maryland and Pennsylvania. She was blessed to raise two amazing sons, Marc Brooks and Marlon Prather.

Valencia enjoyed travel and explored numerous places throughout the world including France, South Africa, Cameroon, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Canada, Iceland, Mexico, Jamaica (3 times), Puerto Rico, Singapore, Thailand, Egypt, Brazil, Malaysia, Israel, Vietnam, just to name a few, and of course, Norway. Norway was one of her favorites because she loved visiting her grandchildren, Anna Malen and Maya Angelina Brooks. One of Valencia’s main questions was always, “Where shall I travel next?”

God has been the guiding force in her life. She has devoted time and effort at her church. She is grateful for fellow Christians at her church that have walked together with her on this journey called life.

One of her scriptures that has directed her is Isaiah 40:31 which states, “But, they that wait upon the Lord shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.”

Valencia is loved by her family, her friends and so many others that she has touched in her life with that wonderful smile!

Valencia leaves to cherish her beloved memory her loving sons, Marc Brooks (Lilian) and Marlon Prather; granddaughters, Anna Malen and Maya Angelina Brooks; her five sisters, Sandra Bateman, Deborah Womack, Yolanda Fortune, Shirley Fortune, Tracey Charles; and two brothers, Gregory Taylor and Anthony R. Brooks; also her three closest friends, Ella Butler, Edith Jones and Deana Coleman; and of course her beloved bird, Charlie.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Brownsville Church of God, 6390 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, PA 17222. Rev. Victor Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Brownsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
