Obituary for Thomas R. Wertz

Thomas R. “Tom” Wertz, 80, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 in his home. Born September 4, 1942 in Chambersburg he was the son of the late John P. Wertz, Sr. and Florence J. (Smith) Wertz.

He was a graduate of Chambersburg High School with the Class of 1960. During high school Tom was on track, football, and basketball teams. His love for sports continued throughout his coaching youth baseball and football and JV High School Girls Softball.

Tom was employed for the Borough of Chambersburg as a lineman supervisor. He retired in 2008 after over 40 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 1599, Elks Club 600, and AMVETS Post 224 all in Chambersburg, PA. Tom enjoyed golfing, fishing, working in his yard, woodworking, and tinkering in the garage. He also enjoyed his Friday nights out with his wife and their friends.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Rowland) Wertz who he married May 8, 1963; two children, Aaron Wertz and his wife Tracy and Noelle Wertz both of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Rachel Waugh and her fiancé Cody Stevens and Wesley Wertz and his fiancé Emily Henry; three great-grandchildren, Beckett, Hunter, and Langston; a brother, John P. Wertz, Jr.; niece Monica Landi and her husband Jorgan; and a nephew, Douglas Zweizig. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Clarence “Ziggie” Zweizig; a sister, Betty J. Haverstock; and a niece Cindy Owens.

Services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 26, 2022 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Rev. Rick Noll officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening as well as an hour prior to the service Wednesday morning in the funeral home.
