Obituary for Rebecca S. Johnson (Snyder)

Rebecca S. Johnson, 79, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at her home in Chambersburg. Born June 14, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska, she was the daughter of the late Emmert F. and Daisy V. (Shaffer) Snyder. She was a graduate of Parkville Senior High School in Baltimore County and earned an Associate’s Degree from the Hagerstown Business College. Following graduation she worked as a medical secretary and later for the US Army Material Command Board at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. While working for the military she met her husband, Richard H. “Dick” Johnson, whom she married on September 21, 1968. She spent the next 34 years moving around the U.S. and Germany following Dick while he served in the U.S. Army before moving to Chambersburg in 2002. She loved to travel, visiting many European countries while living in Germany, and later visiting her children when they lived in Europe. She also loved to sew, cook, and read – in particular historical fiction and mysteries. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Whether it was spending the week at Ocean City, MD or getting together for a picnic and swim, her most cherished times were spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was the #1 fan of her hockey playing grandsons and her gymnast granddaughter.

She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring in Chambersburg where she was active with the Presbyterian Women’s Coordinating Team. She was a member of Martha Custis Chapter #342 Order of Eastern Star in Chambersburg and the Bedford Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She treasured the many friends she made over the years in her church and in the Eastern Star and DAR.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Maura Johnson of Hamilton, VA; her son, Richard H. Johnson, Jr. and wife Tamara of Gainesville, VA; three grandchildren, Samuel, William, and Audrey Johnson; and two sisters, Mary Kathleen Williams and husband David of Everett, PA, and Deborah Thien and husband Michael of Bedford, PA.

A memorial service to celebrate Rebecca’s life will be held at 1pm on May 21, 2022, at The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 North Main Street, Chambersburg, PA. Dr. Andrew Hart will officiate. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
