Obituary for Leon J. Kanagy

Leon J. Kanagy, 80, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Tuesday evening, January 11, 2022 at his home. Born December 13, 1941 in Belleville, PA, he was the son of the late Jacob Y. and Mary M. Yoder Kanagy. A truck driver for 42 years, Leon began his career with the former Nibble with Gibbles and then went on to drive for Overhead Door Company. He retired in 2010 from Food Lion. He was a long-time member of Mission Hill Church in Chambersburg where he had served as Deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and as a member of the church board. He was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to a variety of music; spending time with his family; visiting Belleville, the place of his roots; spending time with God; and traveling with his wife to visit family in other states.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Yoder Kanagy, whom he married June 23, 1962; three daughters, Cynthia K. Witter and husband Kevin of Shippensburg, Michelle L. of Chambersburg; and Maxine J. Commerer and husband Bobby of Shippensburg; and six grandchildren, Marissa, Grant, Garrett, Shane, Katelyn, and Brooke. He is also survived by four sisters, Esther Helmuth and husband Harold of Goshen, IN, Martha King and husband Omer of Lititz, PA, Dorothy Hochstetler and husband Harve of Goshen, IN, and Betty Schrag and husband Jonathan of New Paris, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Air Hill Church, 7041 Cumberland Highway, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Kevin Witter and Rev. Joel Gillman will officiate. Interment will follow in Air Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and from 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Thursday at the church.
