Obituary for Jon L. Jones

Jon L. Jones, 72, of Scotland, PA, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Hershey Medical Center. Born May 3, 1950 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Richard and Mona Cook Jones. Jon was a 1968 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and served with the US Army from 1972 – 1975. He graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Quantitative Business Analysis. Jon was first employed with the Small Business Administration in Harrisburg and then began a life-long career in commercial lending at the former Valley Bank and Trust Company in Chambersburg and continued his employment through a number of mergers and acquisitions. He later retired as Senior Vice President from Susquehanna Bank. He was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church where he served as a member and Past President of the Church Council; was part of the Men’s Bible Study; served on the Finance and Audit Committees; and was found sitting in the front row on Sunday mornings. He was a member of the Chambersburg Noontime Lions Club and was a member and Past Treasurer of Downtown Chambersburg Inc. Jon volunteered at the Chambersburg Hospital and was an avid supporter and stat keeper of Scotland School for Veteran’s Children athletics. He, his wife Sherryl, and their son Matt were proud supporters of Penn State University; The Marching Blue Band; and Joseph Vincent Paterno. Jon enjoyed music, flower gardening, golfing, spending time with the Jones Gang, and spending time with his family at their cabin near Cowan’s Gap. He was an avid reader and loved feeding and watching birds. His wife, Sherryl S. Jones, whom he married May 12, 1974, preceded him in death on February 7, 2017.

He is survived by his son, Matthew J. Jones of Scotland; his granddaughter Ella Marilyn Jones; sister Linda Darland and husband Michael of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law Linda Miller; special friend Brenda Edwards; a number of nieces and nephews; and his dogs Lewis and Lacey. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marilyn Marie Jones; brother-in-law Gil Miller; and in-laws Wally and Marion Michaels McGehee.

A service to celebrate Jon’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Christopher Frye will officiate. Private interment will be at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the church.
