Obituary for Joan P. Wolfgang (Paxton)

Joan Evelyn (Paxton) Wolfgang, 83, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 21, 2023, surrounded by family at Menno Haven Brookview Skilled Nursing Facility in Chambersburg. Born July 26, 1939, in Chambersburg, she was the youngest daughter of the late Joseph M. and Ruth (Stouffer) Paxton.
Joan was a 1957 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. She married Larry M. Wolfgang on November 20, 1960. Early in her life she had worked at the Chambersburg Engineering Company. She later retired after more than 44 years as a supervisor with the state at Pennsylvania CareerLink. She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church and the New Life Sunday School Class. She had been an active member of the American Business Women's Association and the Red Hat Society. She loved to cook, read, tend to her flowers, and collect cookbooks, but her granddaughters delighted her the most. She spent endless hours reading to them and finding games and toys to make time together special. Joan enjoyed playing pinochle with her card club and riding in her husband’s Model A’s. More recently, she enjoyed attending Orioles and Ravens games in Baltimore.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Cathy Spencer (husband Michael) and Carol Phelan (husband William), both of Chambersburg, PA; three granddaughters, Emily Spencer Barnes (husband Josh) of Savannah, GA, Brooke Poe and Alexandra (Lexy) Poe Martin (husband Chase) of Chambersburg, PA; and one great-grandson, Jackson Wolfgang Barnes. She is also survived by one sister, Winifred Reed of Fayetteville, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Janet Perry, Betty Highlands, and Anna Mary Diehl.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, March 31, 2023, in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. Burial will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Menno Haven Benevolent Fund (please note on the memo line - in memory of Joan Wolfgang) 300 Ridgeview, Chambersburg, PA 17201. The family would like to thank the staff at Menno Haven Brookview Personal Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities for the outstanding and loving care Joan received in the last four years of her life.
