Obituary for James C. Hartley

Adored Husband, Father and Grandfather, James ”Jim” C. Hartley, 84, of Chambersburg passed gracefully away at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. Jim was born September 16, 1936 in North Matewan, West Virginia. He was the Son of the late Carlos Hartley and Mildred Backus Parks.

After serving his country in the United States Navy from 1954 - 1962 and traveling to many US cities on assignment, Jim and his wife Jo chose Chambersburg to settle and raise their three daughters. In due time they would become integral parts of their three grandchildren’s lives as well.

There was nothing more important to Jim than his family. A selfless and generous man, Jim continually helped anyone he had the opportunity to. Jim was employed as a Systems Analyst at Letterkenny Army Depot until his retirement after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. James United Brethren Church, an avid train enthusiast and was always up for a good western movie.

He is survived by his wife Jeanetta “Jo” Clark Hartley of Chambersburg; three children, Chryle Hartley, Tammy Butz and husband Douglas, and Kimberly Swackhammer and husband Robert, all of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren, Rachael Butz, Andrew Swackhammer and fiancé Melissa Cornelious, and Seth Swackhammer, all of Chambersburg.

Services and Internment will be Private. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you honor his legacy by being kind and paying it forward to others in need. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
