Obituary for Helen I. McCardell (Mong)

HELEN IRENE (MONG) MCCARDELL, 90, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022 in The Palace Gardens, Homestead, Florida. Born January 21, 1931 in Ringgold, MD, she was the daughter of the late David E. and Lillian Elmyere (Kendall) Mong. She lived her early life in Ringgold. She married Charles W. McCardell on July 6, 1948, in Maryland. They first lived in the McCardell family home on Fish and Game Road.

She attended the New Guilford Baptist Church when she lived in Franklin County. She was an “old fashioned” homemaker - wife, mother and grandmother. The family kitchen was her domain. She enjoyed Christmas, gardening, canning and baking. She always had the radio on listening to good old Rock N Roll – especially Elvis.

She enjoyed traveling to Florida to spend the winter. She loved camping at all the beaches all up and down the East Coast. Her happiest days were summertime with her daughters, grandchildren and sons-in-law in Ocean City, Md. She loved shopping, especially at department stores sales. Her grandchildren called these purchases “Granny Bargains”. She was a wonderful Granny and greatly loved by her family and friends.

She is survived by her two daughters: Angie D. Brezler, Wilmington, NC and Mary C. McCrea, Port St. Lucie, FL, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband Charlie, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters. She was the last of 13 David Mong siblings. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Andrew Brezler. Graveside Services will be private (due to Covid). Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association® (20+) Alzheimer's Association.
