Obituary for Hazel Ruth Abremski
Hazel R. (Smith) Abremski ,98, of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Shippensburg, PA, peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, May 23, 2022. She was surrounded by loving family members at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD.
Hazel was born on April 4, 1924, in Gettysburg, PA, a daughter of the late Huber and Ada (Johnson) Smith. In her early years, Hazel worked at Bendix Radio in Baltimore, Maryland, where she met the love of her life, Daniel Abremski. The two were known to toss radio parts back and forth across the assembly line. Hazel married Daniel in 1947. Three years later, Daniel and Hazel welcomed their daughter, Janice (Shuman). Over the next several years, Hazel worked as a beautician, school bus driver and waitress at the Texas Lunch Restaurant. Later in life, Hazel worked for 25 years at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg, PA, and St. Mark’s Catholic Church, in Greencastle, PA, serving the priests, parish and community. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Wherever she was, she served others with a warm, humble heart and over-flowing generosity.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice R. Shuman of Gaithersburg, MD, grandchildren Douglas (Lynne) Shuman, Matt (Laura) Shuman, and Laura (Will) Przybylek, along with three great grandchildren, Gabriel, Sawyer and Jack. To her family, her most important name was “Nannie.” She played an integral role in each of her grandchildren’s upbringings and lives. Some of her grandchildren’s favorite memories were trips to the “Igloo” (ice cream stand) after school. Her love of baking was always enjoyed by family and friends. There was always something hot out of the oven when family and friends came to visit. More recently, you’d find Nannie racing hot wheels cars back and forth with Sawyer or snuggling with her youngest great-grandbaby, Jack. Among all the values and life-lessons she has taught her family, she will be most remembered for her enduring adage, “One day at a time.”
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Abremski and six siblings, Huber Smith, Jr., Edna Fields, Evelyn Hersh, Elsie Riggs, Ida Jane Koontz, and Glenn Smith.
Please join us in celebrating and remembering Hazel “Nannie” with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Fr. Allan Wolfe will be the celebrant and Fr. Joseph Stahura will be the homilist. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.at the church. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Corpus Christi Church, at the above address, whose goal is to “Live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.”
