Obituary for Harry R. Gearhart Jr.
Harry R. Gearhart, Jr., 92, of Fayetteville, PA passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 15, 1929 in Fayetteville he was the son of the late Harry R. Gearhart, Sr. and Pearl (Caldwell) Gearhart.
He served as an honorable and decorated Senior Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy for 23 years during the European Theatre, Korean War and Vietnam until his honorable discharge January 16, 1969. Following his military service Harry was employed as a clerk for the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserves Association, the Marine Corps League and the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 both in Chambersburg. Harry enjoyed gardening, taking care of his lawn and bird watching. He was an avid patriot.
Harry is survived by three children, Harry “Doc” Gearhart (wife Robin) of Florence, MT, PO2 Mike Sanders (wife Barbara) of Fayetteville, and SGM Troy Gearhart (wife Breese) of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Heather Schisler (husband Michael) of Fayetteville, Natasha Gearhart, McKenna Peters-Gearhart, Mason Peters-Gearhart, Cameron Gearhart and PV2 Tyler Gearhart, all of Chambersburg; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brooke and Gavin; five siblings, Harold Gearhart of Missouri, Robert Gearhart, Jerry Gearhart and Dorothy Kramer all of Fayetteville and Doris Evans of Oak Hill, WV; a number of nieces and nephews; and his dog, Sandy.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Irene L. (Weller) Sanders Gearhart who passed away January 26, 2016.
Services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 12, 2021 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where military honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Friday evening in the funeral home.
