Obituary for Gilbert G. "Pap" Cramer

Gilbert G. “Pap” Cramer, 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Wednesday morning, March 31, 2021 at his granddaughter’s home where he had been residing. Born September 8, 1931 in Mercersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Elmer and Izetta Straley Cramer. Mr. Cramer was a graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and served with the US Army during the Korean War. He later retired from the US Army Reserve with 20 years of service. He was employed for a number of years at T.B. Woods Sons, Inc. and retired in 1991 from Letterkenny Army Depot. He was a life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW and Wesley Yeager Post 606 American Legion. He enjoyed competitive shooting and was a member of the St. Thomas Sportsmen’s Association. He loved dogs, and enjoyed running marathons, mountain biking, and traveling to Germany. On October 1, 2020 Senator Pat Toomey awarded him the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal issued by the government of South Korea. His wife of 41 years, Barbara Cummings Cramer, preceded him in death on December 21, 1992.

He is survived by his son, Gary E. Cramer (Martha “Marty”) of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Tina M. Miller (Randy), Kevin Cramer (Penny), and Cindy Hoover, all of Chambersburg; three great-grandchildren, Ashlee M. Barnhart, Brittany Cramer, Hunter Cramer; and three great-great grandchildren, Keiarra Barnhart, Braedyn Wagaman, and Bentlee Wagaman. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice I. Cramer on January 18, 2021; his brother, John Cramer; and his sister, Janet Love.

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Rev. Murray Stevens will officiate. Military honors will be conducted my members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.

The family suggests contributions in his memory be made to a local animal rescue organization of the donor’s choice.
