Obituary for Dr. Roy A. Himelfarb

Dr. Roy A.  Himelfarb
Dr. Roy A. Himelfarb, DDS, 72, of Chambersburg, PA, died Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born July 11, 1940 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Dr. Hilliard M., MD and Jule Blumberg Himelfarb. Roy was a 1958 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and a 1962 graduate of Georgetown University. He served in the US Navy as a Line Officer from 1962-1969 aboard two destroyers and was an instructor at the Naval Destroyer School. Following his discharge from the Navy he attended dental school at Temple University from 1969 – 1973 and served his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University from 1973 – 1976. He operated a private practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Chambersburg from 1976 until May of 2011.

He was a member of the American Dental Association and the state and local components. He served as President of the Central Pennsylvania Society of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery from 1983 – 1984. He was a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the state and local components; a member of the Middle Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, serving as President from 1985 – 1986; a member of the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology; was Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and served on the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He was active in administrative affaires of the Chambersburg Hospital serving as Chairman of the Dental Department, a member of the Executive Committee for 27 years; President of the medical staff from 1995 – 1997, Medical Director of the former Summit Surgery Center (now the Dr. Roy A. Himelfarb Surgery Center), President of the Board of Managers of the surgery center; and was a member of the Summit Health Board. He was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel and enjoyed volunteering for synagogue and community events. Dr. Himelfarb served on the Board of Directors of Franklin County Red Cross from 1977 - 1982, The Shook Home from 1998 – 2004, Sentry Trust Company from 1997 – 2005 where he served as Vice Chairman from 1997 – 2005, and Surveyor, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care from 2005 – 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah A. Price Himelfarb; two sons, Mark and wife Holly of Lititz, and Aaron and wife Jane of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Connor, Ella, and Madeline; a sister, Ruth Sember and husband Michael of Florida; and a brother, Lee Himelfarb and wife Beverly of Ohio.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 26, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rabbi Jill Hackell and Rev. Dr. William H. Harter officiating. Interment will be in the Sons of Israel Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends from 9:00-11:00 AM Friday at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Congregation Sons of Israel, 209 East King Street, or to Summit Palliative Care, c/o Summit Health Development Office, 785 Fifth Avenue, Suite 1, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
