Obituary for Doris J. McKenzie
Doris J. McKenzie, 91, a guest at The Shook Home and formerly of New Franklin, passed away Thursday morning, November 10, 2022 at the nursing home. Born July 6, 1931 in Guilford Township, she was a daughter of the late Ralph K. and Blanche Statler Small. Early in her life she worked as a teller at the Farmers and Merchants Trust Company. She then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Library Science from Shippensburg University at taught for several years at Corpus Christi Catholic School in Chambersburg. She served as Co-director of Solomon’s Station Nursery School at Solomon’s United Church of Christ near New Franklin. She was a member of Solomon’s United Church of Christ and at one time sang with the church choir. She was a member of the Heart of the Valley Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and along with her husband was a member of the Cumberland Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. She loved teaching, gardening, music, and working with her husband in the New Franklin Community giving rides on their train that is now housed at Norlo Park near Chambersburg. She also enjoyed singing with the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus for a number of years. Her husband, Leslie Arnold McKenzie, whom she married September 6, 1948, preceded her in death on July 14, 2008.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Searfoss and husband Glenn of Columbia, MD; two sons, Leslie McKenzie of Fayetteville and Thomas McKenzie and wife Jill of Waynesboro; a granddaughter who she raised as a daughter, Sherry Ann Bumbaugh and husband Jason of Fayetteville; her brother, Leon Small of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina McKenzie; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ellen Garvin Treynor, Cleta Small, and Kaye Doyle; and three brothers, Marvin, Ted, and John Small..
Services and interment will be private.
