Obituary for Arthur Anthony Quaker Jr.

Arthur Anthony Quaker, Jr., 82, of Newville, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Monday afternoon, April 17, 2023 at his home. Born December 26, 1940 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Arthur Anthony Quaker, Sr. and Marie Thelma Donley Quaker. Mr. Quaker served honorably with United States Army from September 27, 1966 until his retirement on March 6, 1981. His military service included 3 tours in Vietnam during which time he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device and the Purple Heart. He was also the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct 6th Award, 3 Overseas Service Bars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his retirement from the military he was employed with Cumberland Farms Convenience Stores in New Jersey where he worked in maintenance and management. He was last employed as a Youth Aid Supervisor with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the Loysville Youth Development Center. Following his retirement he enjoyed spending his time with his wife and family and caring for his grandchildren. He was a member of the Shippensburg American Legion and the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, chess, fast pitch softball, golf, and playing cards with his grandchildren. He also liked boating, camping at Raystown, and vacationing at Assateague but most of all, he loved spending time with his devoted wife, children, and grandchildren.

Mr. Quaker is survived by his loving wife, Betty Lou Johnson Quaker, whom he married December 7, 1974; five children, Dean Stoki, Jr. of Millerstown, PA, Fred Stoki of Ashburn, VA, Arthur “Tony” Quaker, III and wife Kelli Appleton of Warrenton, VA, Theodore “TJ” Quaker of New Bloomfield, PA, and Catherine “Cat” Quaker Long and husband Douglas of Newville, PA; twelve grandchildren, Darrian and Cheyenne Stoki, Jacob, Zachary, and Colton Quaker, Terrance, Quentin, Marcus, and Hayden Quaker, Austin, Grant, and Katrina Long. He is also survived by four sisters, Mary Ann McGowan of Shermansdale, PA, Frances Intrieri and husband Stephen of Etters, PA, Patsy Ochs of Fresno, CA, and Carol Holtry and husband Larry of Shippensburg, PA; two brothers, Albert Quaker and wife Caryn of Berwick, ME, and Michael Quaker and wife Kerry of Enola, PA; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his a sister, Joan Nelson, and a brother, Ronald Quaker.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the Newville TCP First Church of God with Pastor Wayne Good officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until services begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the church. Military honors will be conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard immediately following the service.
